Involved in a Ridesharing Accident?

Understanding what comes next

Uber and Lyft Accidents

Ridesharing and ride-hailing services, like Uber and Lyft, have surged in popularity in recent years. Ridesharing is convenient and often less expensive than a taxi, and it’s an appealing way of getting around if you plan on drinking or visiting a location where there’s little to no parking (which, let’s face, is unfortunately the case for much of Los Angeles). Nonetheless, ridesharing has created its own set of problems. Uber and Lyft drivers are typically not required to obtain commercial licenses and they need not undergo any kind of specialized training—either in road safety or customer service—to qualify as drivers. Ridesharing companies are also subject to fewer regulations than other commercial vehicle operators, like taxi cabs or truck drivers.   In part, because of this lack of oversight and training, many passengers have been involved in accidents while using a ridesharing service. Some of these accidents have been catastrophic or have caused serious physical injuries, like paralysis and death.

In 2013, on New Year’s Eve, a six-year-old girl was tragically struck and killed by an Uber driver in San Francisco while crossing the street with her mother.   It’s important to know that if you’re involved in an accident as a ridesharing passenger, or if you’re a motorist and your vehicle has been struck by an Uber or Lyft driver, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. Both Uber and Lyft offer $1 million in primarily liability coverage for any injuries caused by one of their drivers if the driver has accepted a fare and is either en route to picking up a passenger or is transporting a passenger to a destination.

If you were an Uber or Lyft passenger and the other motorist was responsible for the accident, you may also be entitled to compensation from the other motorist’s insurer.   At Torero Law, our Uber accident and Lyft accident attorneys specialize in representing clients throughout California who have been injured in ridesharing accidents.
